Aging Out Discussion
22Oct08You can find a lot quickly on the internet these days! There are many groups discussing the current status of youth as they age out of foster care in the United States. Monroe Harding is the only organization in Tennessee to host a central location where all youth who have been in state custody of any kind can come to find the resources they need during this transitional time. It is hard to believe that the eight people working at Youth Connections are helping the whole state of TN transition out of foster care, into independence. Here are just a few of the discussions about ‘emancipation.’ (Remember, MH doesn’t endorse any of the references made in the blog, we’re just sharing information).
Cool People Care
20Oct08The founders of Cool People Care led a seminar today about ‘viral marketing.’ They gave all the attendees lots of information about the various ways we can spread our message to the world. This blog is Monroe Harding’s first step toward keeping more people up-to-date on what is happening here. Things don’t move quickly at Monroe Harding so there are not daily updates, but we hope that you are checking our site regularly and that maybe you have signed up to receive the feeds so you’ll know when an update has been made. This site is a work in progress, please continue to give us feedback and let us know how you can use it better if certain changes are made.
Also, remember to visit cool people care from our links page (lower right-hand list). They are offering a discount and a kick-back to Monroe Harding if you put in our promotional code!

Volunteer Work Day
24Sep08Yesterday we had a great group of volunteers from HCA help us out on campus. One of their main jobs was to revamp the Education Department, which they did! Here’s what our Education Coordinator had to say:
It was really great having the HCA volunteers here to help. It was nice to see smiling faces just wanting to help out. The colors on the walls look great and all of the details in the tutoring room make it much more inviting and definitely more conducive to learning.
The group was also able to work outside on the landscaping and helped finish up an invitation mailing for Laughter for the Children. Our volunteers all have a huge impact on the work we are able to accomplish here at Monroe Harding.
Thanks to everyone who came out to help!

Gold Medals
18Aug08The rules of blogging this week clearly state that you CANNOT have a blog and not mention the Olympics and/or Michael Phelps. I wonder how many times each day that guy’s name pops up on his google alerts! As Bob Costas said, “this is history in the making.” Well it was made and it was something that this country and this generation will remember for a long time. 1976 was a long time ago and it could easily be another 30-some years before there is a new champion clinching more gold medals than anyone else ever has.
Has anyone watched any other parts of the Olympics though? Are they still popular? Going into them, I didn’t think I cared as much as I had in the past. I don’t know if NBC is just making me care or if I really do, but I find myself watching at least a little bit each day. I didn’t even know handball was a sport (and still honestly question it a little bit). Is it a spirit of patriotism or simply awe for the accomplishments?
Its nice to see the accomplishments throughout this two-week period in China. But don’t let go of it when its over. There are a lot of accomplishments in your own backyard everyday. There are people working as hard as Olympic athletes just to learn to walk or pass a class or earn their diplomas or degrees. Let’s cheer them on also!
